Starting Your Trucking Business With A Quality Used Truck

Getting started as an owner/operator in the trucking industry can be rewarding, but is often expensive and can offer some challenges along the way. Often the biggest hurdle that drivers face is buying their first truck and getting started, but if you are willing to start with a good used truck, getting started can be a little easier.

Finding a Truck

One of the first things you need to do is to find a truck to get you started. The brand might not be a big deal to you, but if it is, visit a dealer that sells heavy-duty used trucks and let them know what kind of truck you are looking for.

Many of these dealers will sell all makes and models of used commercial trucks, so you can look at what they have available and see if you can find a truck that works for you at a price you can afford. Often, the choices on a lot that sells many different brands will allow you to get a feel for many different trucks, and you might even find one that you would not have otherwise considered.

Determining Your Needs

It can help to make a list of the things you need, so when you start looking at the trucks available at a dealer that sells heavy-duty used trucks, you can ask about those items. If you are planning to drive overnight or several days in a row, you may want a truck with a sleeper or bunk on it so that you can stay out on the road for long periods.

If you are considering hauling heavier loads, the trucks you are considering may need a larger engine and a transmission with a lower-range gearset in it. You may also want to have a tag axle that allows you to increase the truck's load capacity when needed.

Let the dealer know what you must have in the truck and start there, then look at all the trucks that meet those needs. Commercial trucks may have very different options, so you may find that you can get what you need a little cheaper if you choose a truck with fewer amenities in it.

Set a Budget

Your budget can play a significant role when you are looking at commercial trucks for sale. While many drivers starting out will take out a loan to purchase their truck, the amount you feel comfortable paying monthly for your truck is up to you to decide.

The higher the truck's payments, the more you will need to work to pay the truck off. For some young drivers just getting started, the amount of time on the road is not an issue, but for drivers with a family, keeping the budget a little lower may mean getting home more often to see the family.
